How we sew pieces for costume and party
Party garments do a different job than everyday knits. They need to close fast, catch light across a room, and hold their shape for an evening. We sew forty-five pieces for costumes, focusing on simple adjustments like laced eyelets and gathered elastic waistbands that let one piece work well for an event.
Lacing through eyelets on a costume vest
A costume vest or laced corset closes by pulling a cord through rows of metal eyelets. The cord takes the tension when you pull it tight. This means the lacing is the adjustment, letting one piece fit a range of waists without needing tailored seams. Look at how the metal eyelets sit in the cloth. We punch them through reinforced layers of fabric rather than a single raw layer. That extra backing keeps the metal from pulling free from the seam when the cord is tied. The cloth stays flat across the torso while the cord holds the front together for the night.
Gathering stiff tulle onto an elastic waistband
A tutu skirt relies on stiff tulle gathered directly onto an elastic waistband. The band stretches over the hips and settles at the waist. How the skirt behaves comes down to how many layers of netting we sew into that top seam. More layers push against each other and make the skirt stand out straight from the hips. Fewer layers let the netting drop toward the knee. Some pieces include a smooth woven lining sewn underneath the tulle, while others leave the gathered netting unlined over tights. An unlined skirt stays lighter, but a lining keeps the stiff netting off cloth underneath.
Stitched sequins and printed party shirts
A party shirt needs to read clearly from across a crowded room. We make sequin party shirts and printed party shirts with different surface builds. Stitched sequins sit on a light woven base cloth, with each small disk secured by thread so it catches the light when you move. Printed shirts use flat surface patterns that run over the whole garment. Stitched sequins add weight to the chest and shoulders, while a printed cloth stays smooth against the arms. Neither build is meant for hard friction, but both give a clear look under evening lights.
Wired brims and folding costume hats
Our witch hats and costume headwear use two different brim styles. A wired edge runs a thin metal hoop through the outer brim seam. That wire holds a crisp circular shape through an entire party and keeps the brim from drooping over the face. Other headwear folds flat without internal wire, using the stiffness of the woven cloth alone. Flat-folding hats pack away easily into a shallow drawer once the event ends. Head scarves worn as sashes use plain hemmed edges so you can knot them around the waist or across the hair without bulky seams.
Lace gloves and packing garments away
Lace fingerless gloves rely on open mesh fabric that stretches over the palm and stops below the knuckles. These costume pieces are built for an evening and a photograph, not for years of regular wear. They do not want a hot wash or a machine cycle the morning after an event. Heat and agitators can pull stitched sequins off the ground cloth, crush stiff tulle netting, or warp the wire inside a brim. Sponge off any marks with cold water and let the pieces dry flat. Store them loose so the netting does not take a permanent crease.
- We make forty-five pieces in our costume and party section including vests, tutus, and hats.
- Our full catalogue holds three hundred fifty-eight pieces across nine clothing and knitwear sections.
- A laced corset vest adjusts across waists by pulling a cord through rows of set eyelets.
- Tutu skirts use gathered layers of stiff tulle sewn onto a single wide elastic waistband.
- Wired brim edges hold their shape during wear while flat-folding hats pack down without wire.
Putting party pieces into storage
Party garments trade heavy construction for light weight and bright surface finish. After the party, check the eyelets, wipe down the cloth, and store wired hats where the brim stays flat. Completing an order happens on the storefront that carries our pieces, alongside our everyday socks, swim pieces, and thermal knits.
